Holopuni Sailing Canoes
The Holopuni is a 30’, 3-place, double ama (outrigger) sailing canoe designed by Kaua’i’s Nick Beck, who was in 2024 inducted into the Waterman Hall of Fame by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation. The canoes are steered in the traditional Polynesian manner with a large paddle. Each 3-person crew possesses overlapping skills in sailing, outrigger canoe paddling, surfing, swimming, and navigating.
About Nick Beck
In May 1981, Nick Beck set off in a home-built Hawaiian sailing canoe with his two young sons from South Point on the island of Hawai’i, intent on island hopping back to his home island of Kaua'i. This journey became the adventure of a lifetime, one that carried him from the southernmost to the northernmost points of the Hawaiian Islands. Beck named his canoe ‘Holopuni’ — ‘to sail everywhere’ in Hawaiian—and he has been building and evolving sailing canoes ever since. There are now Holopuni canoes throughout Hawai’i, Tahiti, Fiji, New Zealand, New Guinea, Australia, and Mauritius, and they sail the east and west coasts of the United States, even in the Great Lakes.
